چکیده

Sir, In their interesting paper on the incidence of symptomatic vertebrobasilar stenosis in the general population, Marquardt et al. (2009) report the results of magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) studies of 141 patients with prior minor vertebrobasilar events, having detected 550% stenosis in 26.2% of cases. They also describe the results of carotid ultrasound studies performed on 357 patients who had suffered carotid transient ischaemic attack or minor stroke, with 11.5% of cases presenting 550% stenosis of the vessel responsible. They conclude that the prevalence of 550% symptomatic vertebrobasilar stenosis is

Risk of ischemic stroke in patients with symptomatic vertebrobasilar stenosis undergoing surgical procedures.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE There is little information to provide an estimate for stroke risk in patients with established stenosis or occlusion in the basilar or intracranial vertebral arteries undergoing surgical procedures. The objective of this study was to determine the ischemic stroke risk in this specific patient population. METHODS A medical records linkage system retrospectively identifi...

Treatment of symptomatic vertebrobasilar artery stenosis with stent-assistant angioplasty in the elderly.

OBJECTIVE To study the efficacy, safety, and feasibility of stent-assistant angioplasty (SAA) in the treatment of symptomatic vertebrobasilar artery stenosis in the elderly. METHODS SAA was performed in 26 elderly patients with symptomatic vertebrobasilar artery stenosis. The success rate, perioperative complications, and long-term effectiveness were evaluated. RESULTS A total of 29 balloon...

Key perspectives on stenting of symptomatic vertebral artery stenosis, resident involvement in neurosurgery, antithrombotic therapy following sellar and parasellar tumor resection, and radiosurgery for vestibular schwannomas

The objective of this study was to assess the safety and feasibility of stenting plus best medical treatment compared with best medical treatment alone in patients with symptomatic atherosclerotic vertebrobasilar artery stenosis of at least 50%. The patient population comprised patients from seven hospitals in the Netherlands from 2008 to 2013. Key inclusion criteria were a vertebrobasilar tran...

VAST: Vertebral Artery Stenting Trial. Protocol for a randomised safety and feasibility trial

BACKGROUND Twenty to 30 percent of all transient ischaemic attacks and ischaemic strokes involve tissue supplied by the vertebrobasilar circulation. Atherosclerotic stenosis >/= 50% in the vertebral artery accounts for vertebrobasilar stroke in at least one third of the patients. The risk of recurrent vascular events in patients with vertebral stenosis is uncertain and revascularisation of vert...

Stent-assisted angioplasty of symptomatic intracranial vertebrobasilar artery stenosis: feasibility and follow-up results.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The natural history of symptomatic, untreated posterior circulation stenosis is dismal, with many patients experiencing significant morbidity or mortality. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and results of stent-assisted angioplasty of symptomatic intracranial vertebrobasilar artery stenosis. METHODS We reviewed the imaging findings and medical re...
